I just found out that our landlord renewed her teaching contract another year, and that we'll be staying here in our wonderful house/garden/garage workshop/neighborhood through at least the end of spring 2010. !!!!! |

Raynor the Fractious is finally eating again. Whew! Trying to feed a sick kitty with absolutely no interest in food is not easy, and I was beginning to think that it might require more creativity than I possess. Note to all of you cat people out there: Earth's Best vegetable turkey dinner baby food is apparently chicken noodle soup for felines. |

My backyard is aswarm with small children armed with rakes, baskets & sticks, and they're picking apples from my still-loaded apple tree. Sweet! I have to admit that I was a little alarmed when they first ran into my yard screaming enthusiastically and wielding rakes. Apparently I need either more coffee earlier in the morning or a tad bit more time around children. Good thing Dezso wasn't here, as he might have barricaded us inside the house at the first sighting!
Just ran outside for more info, and they're from the the Blue Sky kindergarten down the street - I think I've seen them walking by in the past. I am going to be so sad when my landlord returns and we're forced to leave this neighborhood! |

Do any of you know anything about either Bluetech or Pretty Lights? They're playing tomorrow night at the show that was supposed to include Pitch Black, who very sadly had to cancel due to a death in the family. |

I am so happy about autumn arriving that I don't even have words for it! What I do have plenty of words for, however, is how much I enjoy taking the bus to work. Being somewhat of an introvert, I always get a little irritated when I'm deep in my head reading or writing or thinking, and someone interrupts to initiate some sort of social interaction. But once I let my inner polite little southern girl take over and start chatting, wow do I have the best random conversations with strangers I meet while waiting for buses. Hurray for public transportation and my lovely city full of interesting people! I really do wonder sometimes if I'd have similar experiences in most other cities; whether it's more a question of location or just being interested enough in people to somehow invite this sort of thing, combined with the slowed down aspect of not being in a car.
On a less positive note, caffeine withdrawal today is proving to be a bit of a bitch. I'm drinking green tea, but just want to find a vat of coffee, dive in, and flail around for a while. |

I just found out that I get to go back to Romania, probably sometime in the fall. Eeeee! This time, hopefully I'll be able to take Dezso with me, and check out Budapest when we're done. Double triple quadruple eeeeeee!!! Now I just want to head straight home and surround myself by language books for the rest of the night! Too excited to type without excessive use of exclamation points! |

I have to keep reminding myself that it's good to learn things I don't immediately do well...I may have an impressive collection of headstands, but I am not a graceful girl. Sigh. Happily, though, I learned tonight that balancing a big person on my back is much easier than I would have expected!

I'm sitting here in a conference room in Timişoara, getting ready to make my first presentations of the visit. It took a while to get through all of the network tangles to get online, but I'm finally here. I feel like I should be nervous, but everyone is so damn nice that it's hard to work up too much angst. Finally meeting all of these wonderful people I've worked with for years is so lovely, and they even brought me a cup of (happily very strong) coffee because they heard that I'm a coffee freak. Ha! Now that is attention to detail!

I realized today at lunch that introducing unsuspecting victims to the joys of tom kha is one of my new favorite things in the world. All three of my lunchmates perked up so suddenly with such looks of shocked and astonished pleasure that I almost thought I'd be able to convince them to join me in song and dance. (Tell me, is there anyone out there who honestly doesn't fight the urge to break into tap dancing and sonnets halfway through a bowl of coconutlemongrasstofubliss??) The next time I throw a party, I'm going to make up huge vats of this stuff! |

I feel very silly admitting this, given the fact that most people on my friends list could probably speak to a room of people blind-folded and naked after about ten cups of coffee (in fact, please raise your hand if you've done exactly that), but I finally joined Toastmasters and gave my first speech today! I'm unreasonably excited, since struggling with this stupid public speaking phobia has been draining energy and preventing me from doing all sorts of things that I might have tried otherwise for at least ten years. Not only did it go extremely well, but I'm actually looking forward to the next speech. Yay! It's very, very surreal to think of being me and not being terrified to speak in front of more than about five people. I would say that I regret not having done this sooner, but at least all of the years of building up more and more levels of terror just make the whole process of dealing with it all the more exciting now. |

Last night during my string/flute quartet practice, Judy (viola player) made me one of the nicest and most unusual compliments I've ever received as a flute player. She said, "your part was so beautiful and restful, I almost fell asleep." !!! That's not something I hear often when playing an instrument that sometimes gets up to an ear-bleeding register.
Now I just need to find some quartet music (preferably for flute/violin/viola/cello, although violin/violin/viola/cello would work ok too) that's a bit more modern than Mozart. Any suggestions? I'm good to go with solo flute stuff, but I'm just now getting into the ensemble thing and have no idea what to look for.
Oh yes, and welcome welcome to the beautiful and talented (and well-dosed with Halloween candy) rachmagnificent! |

I ran into a neighbor this morning at 11am, and found out that there was a mountain lion chilling out in a backyard across the street - apparently he spent the night prowling around the neighborhood, and hadn't yet bothered to make it back up into the mountains. I love living in Boulder! |
